Being a cool climate, lively white wine with electric acidity comes easily to Ontario. But wrapping that electricity with clean, nuanced, silky fruit and pricing around $15 a bottle? That’s a bit more difficult. Here are five local wines that do just that. 2013 Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Black Series Riesling Gewurztraminer, VQA Niagara Peninsula (Ontario), #357129,… read more

It’s nearly impossible to talk about the best wines for Thanksgiving without mentioning Burgundy. This French region just southeast of Paris doesn’t just make straight-up gorgeous wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that pair perfectly with roast turkey, it is the birthplace of those varieties. Crisp Chablis is the quintessential unoaked Chardonnay with its cool scent… read more

This new red is dapper, with black cherry, blackberry and an intriguing nose of graphite; the flavours show black plums, cedar, black cherry and a finish of refined cassis. A wonderful Ontario value red.

Wine Of The Week – Southbrook Connect White 2010

October 5, 2011 9:50 am - Posted by Jody in Drink

Each week I like to choose a new wine to introduce to our fans. These wines vary by region, by varietal and even by price. I don’t think cost and value are necessarily related. So I like to focus on wines I have experienced on my travels and I think our fans will enjoy trying. salut!

I love it when I find a wine that’s so low in alcohol yet so packed with flavour! It means you can enjoy it over an evening without falling asleep on the sofa at 7pm. This wine is liquid refreshment: light floral notes, white peach and melon. It’s slightly off-dry (a touch of sweetness) which makes it perfect for dishes with a little sweetness or spice, such as glazed ham or light to medium curries and Asian fare. The bonus is that this wine is organic. Food matches: seafood, salad, pork.

TASTING NOTE:

Medium ruby in the glass with aromas of earth, mixed berries, spice cupboard and a slight tobacco note. The palate is dry, balanced and interesting with a bright acidity, velvety tannins and lots of red and black fruit. The medium-long finish adds a lovely spicy accent. Age this for 1-2 years or enjoy it tonight with gourmet burgers, sausages, or pheasant.
