Liquid Assets | Wine as an Investment

January 3, 2011 10:21 am - Posted by Jody in Learn

As one year comes to a close and another begins there is always a lot of interest in investment returns, the stock market and one’s own financial health. More than a few of you probably have new year resolutions to spend less and invest more.

There has also been a lot of talk recently about record wine auctions, rising prices for cases and the value of wine as an investment vehicle. There’s no doubt that Chinese buyers along with Indian investors have been driving up the cost and therefore value of wine. It is a trendy topic of discussion and I have to admit those of us who have a decent wine cellar often daydream about hitting the jackpot and using our collection to retire. But that’s probably not going to happen. In my case at least I expect to drink it long before I hit the age where fishing looks attractive (note to our fans  who like to fish please don’t flame me I was only making a point).

So can wine be an investment, is it a worthwhile addition to your portfolio and how do you go about starting a collection?  These are all good questions and as usual I have none of the answers. But as luck would have it, I do have friends and associates who know what they are talking about. Therefore in the weeks ahead we will be doing semi-regular blogs on how you too can build your own wine portfolio (note to our fans who like puns, this one was for you).

Now comes the usual legalese. We don’t recommend any investment strategy and can’t make any comments on individual investment plans. Everybody’s financial situation is different so please consult your financial advisor before making any decisions. But if you are interested in learning more about collecting wine, attending auctions and looking at wine as an asset class stay tuned.

Part 1: The Basics

We’ll start our series on liquid assets with a short overview from Andrew Caillard, Fine Wine Specialist, Langton Wines which is Australia’s leading online auction site. Andrew is an expert in wines for auction and does a really good job of summing up the types of wines that you may want to consider for cellaring or as an investment.
